Dakota Medical Foundation
Celebrates 50 Years of Extraordinary Health Advancement

Our history began as a driving desire to advance area healthcare. With a city on the grow and medical innovations on a steep trajectory, the visionary physicians of Dakota Clinic wanted to bring their patients the best of modern medicine in
a state-of-the-art hospital.

They formed the charitable corporation Dakota Medical Foundation with the intention to build a progressive, new nonprofit community hospital. It would sit adjacent to their clinic on what was then the south edge of Fargo. Initial tax-exempt status was granted on May 26, 1962.

Groundbreaking for Dakota Hospital in June 1963 was followed with 15 months of construction for opening on November 2, 1964.

The hospital would develop into a major referral center, eventually forming a large campus renowned for its kidney dialysis, joint replacement, open heart surgery and other specialties. It was known, too, for its close-knit professional staff, its deeply-dedicated physicians, high quality patient care and pursuit of continual innovation.

During the 1980s, the federal government converted to a new prospective payment system, changing the face of health care in the United States. Like others, Dakota Hospital was thrown into a battle for reimbursement in an environment of keen competition and strict government control.

Eventually, the hospital was sold to for-profit Champion Healthcare. Proceeds from that phased 1990s sale began the endowment for DMF grant-making, which started in 1996. Regional nonprofits in the patient service area of the former Dakota Hospital received funding of programs to care for the underprivileged and medically underserved.

Some five years into its "modern history," DMF leadership began to explore paths for more profound reach and effectiveness.

Dakota Medical Foundation began directing bold, ambitious health initiatives: long-term, comprehensive projects that gathered many partners to the table, collaborating to improve health and healthcare access for the people of this region.

Strong relationships with hundreds of organizations, agencies and community leaders were formed. This also gave rise to a new organization: Impact Foundation formed in 2005 to provide professional development and technical assistance services to build the capacity of nonprofits to produce superior results.

Today, Dakota Medical Foundation focuses funding, expertise, best practices and knowledge - its own and from others - to strategically multiply results. Expectations for evidence and accountability help Dakota Medical Foundation ensure that its funding and resources are invested to dramatically improve health and access to care.
